Overview

This programme equips learners to operate a counterbalanced lift truck (F1 forklift) safely, conduct inspections, handle loads, and work according to site and legal requirements.

What you will learn

  • Legal & Safety Framework: OHS Act basics, site rules, signals, signage, and safe work procedures.
  • Machine Components & Controls: Functions of mast, carriage, forks, hydraulics, instruments and warnings.
  • Stability & Load Handling: Centre of gravity, the stability triangle, load charts, rated capacity and derating.
  • Pre-operation Inspection: Daily checks, defect reporting, housekeeping and lockout principles.
  • Start-up & Shut-down: Safe start, controls testing, parking, isolation and securing the truck.
  • Operating Techniques: Lifting, transporting, stacking/de-stacking, working on inclines, confined spaces and aisles.
  • Load Types & Pallets: Fork spacing, load integrity, wrapping/strapping, uneven or fragile loads.
  • Battery/LP Gas Procedures: Charging/refuelling, ventilation, PPE and emergency actions.
  • Communication: Hand signals, spotter coordination, horn/alarms and visibility management.
  • Environmental Awareness: Pedestrian safety, floor conditions, ramps, docks and traffic flow.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age and medically fit for operating tasks.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy (recommended: ABET 3 / Grade 9 or equivalent).
  • Valid ID/passport; basic English communication advantageous.
  • Required PPE on practical days (safety shoes, hi-viz, etc.).

  • Duration (Novice): 3–5 days (theory & practical)
  • Duration (Refresher/Recert): 1–2 days

Assessment & Certification

  • Theory assessment (knowledge test) and practical driving assessment on site or at our facility.
  • On competence, learners receive a certificate of competence and operator card.
  • Industry practice typically requires refresher training/recertification at set intervals; follow employer and OHS requirements.
